A composer and conductor of genius, Eugène Bozza (1905–1991) left us several operas, ballets, large-scale symphonic and choral works, but his worldwide reputation is derived mainly from his many chamber works, written for various instrumental formations with a preference for wind instruments. Bozza composed the Aria during the period of his Grand Prix de Rome in 1934. A free adaptation of the third movement of J. S. Bach’s Pastoral in F Major for organ (BWV 590), this lyrical piece demonstrates the composer’s taste and predilection for wind instruments, in particular for the flute.

In dit boek staan nieuw gecomponeerde muziekstukken van bekende componisten van blaasmuziek die je kunt gebruiken voor je A-examen. Natuurlijk kun je deze muziek ook spelen bij andere gelegenheden, bijvoorbeeld als je voorspeelt in de muziekschool, bij de muziekvereniging of tijdens een solistenconcours. Er zijn stukken mét en zonder pianobegeleiding. Je kunt jezelf dus solistisch presenteren, maar ook samen met een pianist.

Op de bijbehorende mp3-audiotracks die online beschikbaar zijn, hoor je hoe de muziek klinkt als die vertolkt wordt door een beroemde blazer. Ook de pianobegeleidingen zijn in mp3-formaat beschikbaar. Dat is handig als je docent geen piano speelt. Maar helemaal ‘echt’ wordt het als je docent of een andere pianist de pianobegeleidingen speelt. Daarom zijn ze in dit boek afgedrukt.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 1750) composed St. Matthew’s Passion, BWV 244, in the 1720s and it is believed that the first performance took place on April 11, 1727 at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. The music arranged here for Flute and Piano is the heart-wrenching aria, “Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben,” extracted from the middle of the second part of the work. To set the scene, the aria comes after Jesus has been presented to the multitudes in a fast a furious, rowdy double orchestra and choir exclamation, and is condemned to death by crucifixion. Out of this outcry, the solitary flautist and soprano singer reflect on the question of sin, judgement and punishment. In thismost hauntingly vulnerable aria, Bach manages to find both beauty and fragility to reflect upon this question.

Celtic Music for Flute by Jessica Walsh contains 44 tunes for flute which can be played solo or with a chord instrument. This great collection includes tunes from Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, and the Isle of Man. The melodies were chosen from more than four hundred years of Celtic music. Most of the pieces have been extended with variations, which make the tunes a more suitable length for performances and are a lot of fun for the flutist to play.

In addition, they will introduce the beginner to the joys of improvising in Celtic music, in which ornamenting and augmenting melodies is a tradition. Downloadable audio files accompany every tune in the book. Though the tunes are very effective as solo material, Jessica chose to record most of them with guitarist Allan Alexander. Allan has rendered the chords artfully, and the result is really lovely music which is a pleasure to listen to.

For the player who is new to Celtic music, the recording will give insights into the melodies, and it will allow the flutist who has no access to a chord instrument to hear the harmonic progressions. For those who know and love these wonderful tunes, it will be a joy to hear them played by two musicians who obviously love to play this music together.The audio files which comes with the book has all 44 of the tunes in the same order in which they appear in the book.

The audio files will give you insights into the music, and it will be enjoyable to listen to on its own merit.
